In the fall of 1984, my oldest son was born. Aside from the specialness of the event, there are a few other details I remember as well. First of all, at the time I had full health insurance coverage (Blue Cross) through my employer. For a family plan, it cost $125/month or $1500/year.
That’s right, for $1500 worth of insurance a year; all of the costs surrounding my son’s birth were covered. This continued through his pediatric visits afterwards as well. I didn’t have prescription drug coverage included, but all of the doctors’ visits and hospital expenses were fully covered. I had no deductibles, no out-of-pocket expenses, and no income thresholds to consider.
As a private insurance company, Blue Cross was solvent and largely unencumbered by government interference at the time. In the free market, they were able to provide a quality, affordable product which worked very well for my family and me.
So, let’s fast forward some 32 ½ years. Today, that same coverage under Obamacare would cost me and my family around $26,000. This is an increase in health insurance costs over the period of more than 1700%!
Now, some may say that everything has increased in cost in America over the past three decades. That is true, but hardly to this gross extent. For example, since 1984, the price of gas has risen about 400%. The average price of new car has risen 600%. The cost of a gallon of milk has risen around 100%. And, the cost of a loaf of bread has gone up around 200%.
So why has Obamacare become the “Unaffordable” Care Act? One word answers this question – government. Since Obama and his Democrat minions took over the healthcare industry in early 2010, prices have skyrocketed and quality and availability of service has plunged sharply. (In case you have forgotten, not one single Republican voted for Obamacare.)
Deceptively, Obama and the Democrats have made the argument that now more people have insurance than had it before. That may be true to some extent. If something is mandated by law, probably most people will accept the law and do as they are told. This is especially true if there is a stiff financial penalty for non-compliance. (Although, the IRS recently reported to having received over $3 billion in Obamacare penalty payments in 2015.)
So, what is going on here? Why has the government virtually destroyed the best healthcare system in the world that has provided medical coverage to more people than at any other time in human history? It’s very simple – power and control.
Obama (and before him Hillary) and his socialist central-planning cadre have sought to control more and more of American society for decades. This push after Obama’s 2009 inauguration and full Democrat Congressional majorities gave them the opening they long waited for – a chance to take over a significant portion of the American economy.
If we add into that the “crony socialism” that developed with the Obama Administration and the big healthcare insurance companies and large hospital chains, we see the current train wreck.
Today, more and more people have been ravaged economically by Obamacare (even with the enslaving government subsidies). More and more people are also avoiding medical treatment for easily curable conditions because of the out-of-pocket costs involved. And, both proliferating government bureaucrats and bloated insurance companies have gotten richer and richer.
One of the other significant features never ever talked about by Washington when it comes to healthcare’s exploding costs is the lawyer factor. Thousands of lawyers have become quite rich over the past couple of decades via medical malpractice lawsuits. But, given the fact that over 70% of Congress is infested with lawyers, many of whom take fat contributions from trial lawyers’ lobbyists, don’t expect any kind of reform of these abuses soon.
Intentionally so; not one word of Obamacare dealt with “tort reform” – the necessity to reform laws concerning the gross abuse of lawsuits today. So as a result, lawyers, politicians, and insurance companies have gotten richer and Americans’ health has declined.
What Obamacare has essentially become is yet another odious tax on middle-class working Americans. This is one of those “dirty little secrets” Washington continues to publicly deny. All politicians talk about helping the middle class; especially around election time. But, it is in American’s middle class where the bulk of the nation’s wealth lies. By virtue of its size, the middle class pays the lion’s share of the tax burden. You see, there just aren’t enough “rich” people in America to fund the government alone. Even if Washington stole all the money from the nation’s millionaires and billionaires, it would do very little to fund the bloated 3 trillion dollar budget and 20 trillion dollar national debt.
Nope, the rabid socialists and professional class of Washington politicians formed a “devil’s bargain” with Obamacare to fleece the majority of working Americans – the middle class. So, put together Obama’s “crony socialism” and the “crony capitalism” of Washington’s lobbyists and the end result is the economic rape of the American taxpayer via a mandated healthcare system that will never work efficiently or pervasively to make and keep Americans healthy.
Some may argue that more poor people are now covered since Obamacare has become the law of the land. But, this is a red herring. Medicaid may have expanded in several states, but so has the gross abuse and fraud endemic in the system.
No, the best way to help the poor with their healthcare in America is for more local and state-level control of funding, not some distant agency in Washington with a “one size fits all” approach to poverty services. We just saw a dramatic illustration of this with a recent news story of how the USDA’s food stamp program has been scammed again to the tune of close to $3 billion by dead people using the system for their own profit. (No information was reported as to how many of these dead people are also on Democrat voter rolls!)
The bottom line is this – it’s still Washington vs. America when it comes to our hard-earned money. The only way to “fix” Obamacare is to completely scrap it and allow the free market to level costs and improve quality. If we get government out of the middle of patients and their doctors, then healthcare will improve and costs will drop dramatically.
But, as long as Washington politicians, greedy lawyers, and politically well-connected health insurance companies stand in between us and our healthcare providers, we will never see improvement.
This scam must be ended. Hard-working people must be set free from economic bondage. And doctors must be allowed to go back to what they do best – healing the sick.
Yes, we all want to have affordable health insurance. Yes, we all want genuinely poor people to have access to health care. And yes, we all want to keep more of our hard-earned money.
All of this is possible if just get the Washington scammers out of the system for good and allow American freedom to control things once again.
It is time to “pull the plug” on Obamacare once and for all!
