As the election of 2016 draws closer more and more people are looking to some person or some party for the salvation of the nation. For many their hopes are pinned on Donald Trump. Others are looking to Hillary Clinton. On the Republican side, especially among those of the never Trump camp, hopes and aspirations reside in the congressional races and trying to maintain or expand control of the House and Senate. Conservatives are especially concerned about the future of the Republic.
I hate to go all doom and gloom, but I think the Republic is finished! We just haven’t the courage to admit it to ourselves. Furthermore, I contend that what we are currently witnessing is the judgment of God upon this nation. If you find that hard to stomach or hard to believe just consider for a moment our current Presidential race. Neither candidate is fit to be President of the United States.
Hillary, as Secretary of State, allowed four Americans to die in Benghazi, Libya. She has violated numerous laws governing national security and gotten away with it. Nobody knows, or can even begin to calculate, how much damage she has done to the national security of this country. What’s even more sobering about this is that it’s just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, where she’s concerned.
Trump on the other hand appears to be a pathological liar. He is a man that appears to be even more in love with himself than the current occupant of the White House. Trump is on record as saying that he is the only one who can fix America’s problems – Trump and Trump alone. The man doesn’t understand the first thing about humility. Additionally, he is a serial divorcee and self confessed philanderer.
The one thing that really sets off bells and whistles for me is that Trump, though he claims to be a Christian, has admitted that he has never asked God for forgiveness. Apparently, he feels as if he has done nothing he needs to seek forgiveness for.
You may ask how does this prove the judgment of God upon America? Well, these things alone don’t. However, when you look at the bigger picture of where we are as a nation and throw Trump and Hillary into the mix, it looks pretty bad.
So, what does judgment look like?
To find out one needs to go back to the book of Leviticus in the Bible. The 27th chapter gives a list of blessings for a nation that reveres God and is obedient to His commands. These blessings promise economic prosperity and success for the nation that acknowledges God. The following verse is especially poignant considering where we now find ourselves as a nation:
“I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none will make you afraid…and the sword will not go through your land…You will chase your enemies, and they shall fall by the sword before you.” (Lev.26:6-7 NKJV)
This nation once was a land of peace – a land where you could lay down to sleep without fear. We were a land that never lost at war. All our enemies fell before our “sword.” No more. We were indeed a nation blessed by God. No more. However, Leviticus also lays out a series of curses of which this particular passage is the most telling:
“I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume… and cause sorrow of heart… I will set My face against you, and you shall be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you shall reign over you, and you shall flee when no one pursues you.” (Lev. 26:16-17 NKJV)
This reads like yesterday’s paper. Who can deny that since 9/11, Islamic terrorism has ruled over us in many ways, and we have fled from enemies that weren’t even pursuing us (i.e., Barack Obama’s withdrawal from Iraq).
With this in mind I think a good argument can be made that this nation is beginning to experience the judgment of God. Then if one will consider what the book of Proverbs has to say about those who would rule a nation it is enough to make you tremble.
Things like Proverbs 16:12 which says: “It is an abomination for kings to commit wickedness.” If it is an abomination for kings, then surely it is also an abomination for those who would be king to commit wickedness, and both Trump and Clinton are guilty of great wickedness.
Think about this one from Proverbs 29:2: “when a wicked man rules, the people groan”. Our current President, in my estimation, is a wicked man and the people are definitely groaning under his rule. Hillary isn’t a man but her wickedness has caused the people to groan, and Trump though not a “king” yet has caused many to groan just at the thought of him becoming President.
So, from where will our national salvation come?
The Bible makes it clear that salvation is found in no other name but the name of Jesus! For there is no other name given under heaven by which we must be saved. If this nation is to be saved, we must as individuals and as a nation repent of our sins, turn back to God, and cry out to the Lord of all creation, Jesus Christ. Anything less than that will lead us further down the path that we are currently on until at last we are destroyed as a nation.
We cannot, and will not, be saved by any man, any woman, or any party.
