Since 2007, I’ve supported my family by helping others with social media. The punchline is that I’m really not a huge fan in general; social media CAN be used for good but is more often used for bad. It connects people, but it also generates a venue for narcissism. It can make people feel good, but more often it makes people, particularly the vulnerable, feel inadequate. It can be used to share conservative ideas, but it’s heavily weighted towards pure liberalism.
I like the idea of social media. I am skeptical of what it is becoming. With that said, it’s a necessary component of the media. As such, we post to it very often.
The other bad part is that it establishes credibility for publications. We are new but we’ve tried to remain exceptionally active. Still, our social media “following” is too small for the site to be taken seriously. I was denied a press pass today because we didn’t have enough Facebook fans.
That won’t happen again. We’re investing in promotions of the Facebook page, but we can use your help, too. It’s simple. Like our page. Follow us on Twitter if that’s your thing. In our second month we broke a million pageviews but we have well under the 10,000 Facebook fan threshold, so by the current “press” standards we’re irrelevant.
That’s all. I’m not going to ask for any more information. We’re not going to put in an annoying “like our page” popup. We just want to report the conservative news that people need to read and to do that effectively, we need Facebook fans. Thanks!
